Bullet Hell/"Danmaku"/Curtain Fire
Bullet Hell (also known as "Danmaku" which means "Curtain Fire") is a subgenre of sidescrolling shooters.
It's based around really complex patterns of attacks that the player MUST dodge (or else!).
Typically, the attacks are very colorful, which creates a situation like:
"Ooooh... So pretty..." Then, moments later, "WHAT THE HELL? HOW DO YOU DODGE ALL THIS? THIS IS UNFAIR!"
Yeah.
The most popular creator of Bullet Hell games (which are actually fun to play!) is known as "ZUN."
His series of games is called "The Touhou Project", which includes games like Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil (fun), Imperishable Night (hard as hell, but fun) and other games I haven't played.
I highly recommend either of those games.
Here's a video giving you an idea of what the genre is like:

And this is an example of how it can SUCK:

The second link, so that's just an extra stage? Not the last boss, lol I wonder what he or she is like.
The game looks interesting, but challenging. I doubt I would get pass the first level though.

'swhat I thought.
Fortunately, the hit box is relatively small, so bullets can pass through you without you dying.
It's a lot easier than you think.
Also, China (really named Hong Mei Ling) has the best stage/boss music.
Yeah, the fans at one point completely forgot Hong Mei Ling's name, so everyone called her China. Or Shanghai Alice.

98, I think. I think it's been ported, though...

You mean Windows 98? Oh wow I thought it was for a home console, that is pretty old then. I kind of thought it would of been some kind of arcade game to. Just imagine trying to play that game in the arcade...every second it would say "Insert coins to continue."
